A spokesperson for Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday said airstrikes by the country in Syria are targeting Islamic State militants and other "well known" groups.
Russia said its airstrikes have destroyed 12 Islamic State targets including a command center and two arms depots since they started Wednesday, the Associated Press reported.
The airstrikes drew a sharp rebuke from the United States and raised tensions further in the region. Moscow earlier insisted that it was targeting Islamic State militants while U.S. officials and others said it appeared to be attacking opposition groups fighting Syrian government forces.
Speaking to reporters Thursday, Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia is targeting a list of other groups, as well as the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, the AP reported.
